It is advisable as During September is the School Holidays .
Different states go on holidays at different times so popular places can be busy over more than the states 2 week holiday period.

I have travelled a lot in Australia and never pre booked accomodation and never had a problem with getting it. It really depends on if you know exactly where you want to be any given day. When I travel I like to see the accomodation as I’ve been to towns and shopped around a bit and ended up with much superior accomodation at some places for the same price as not so good. I like to stop when and where I want as I go travelling. Sometimes I stay in lovely cabins at caravan parks with kitchens for the same price as a motel with only tea and coffee making facilities. I always book in around 4 pm as many travellers stop later than that and places start to fill up. Also I often call into an internet cafe the same day or night before and get a excellent deal from Wotif.com.au. but these are usually only available in the bigger towns.

I have gone to Queensland in the middle of Christmas,on the Gold Coast and got accommodation no probs. You can go directly to a real estate agent for holiday accommodation in houses and units,on the Gold Coast and Sunshine Coast. They like you too stay for at least two or three nights,to make it worth there while.
It can work out cheaper than motels, plus you got heaps more room and many have pools and spas and BBQs etc.
Many of these agents have web sites.Good advice given to you about wotif.com. But also try expedia.com it has links to Australia and people give ratings and comments about where they have stayed and you can use this to book the same day or day before as they also have deals. We did this for 6 weeks in the USA and was great to use.
Also don’t be afraid to try caravan parks. They are nearly always on the beach and have a range of cabins from basic to luxury. They all have Kitchens .bathrooms etc.
You will always find someplace to stay,I have never sleep on the street!
Good luck and have a great time.

just went to mackay for night, absolutely no accomodation in our whole area due to floods, people moved in to motels, caravan parks etc, so if you are coming up this way central / north qld, book in, we ended up paying a massive amount for 1 night
