What is the best way to get around in Queensland Australia?

A few buddies and I are going to be visiting Australia between Dec. 30 – Jan 14. Rentals cars seem to be pretty pricey, so we are looking for alternative ways to get around. Since all three of us will have surfboards it makes things a bit trickier.

1. Do the public bus systems allow for surfboards?
2. What are the best ways to travel up the Gold Coast?

Full points for a detailed answer with links!

Thanks in advance!

I’m pretty sure I’ve seen people carry surfboards and other things on buses and trains, you shouldn’t have a problem there. Depending on where you’re staying, the best way to get to the Gold Coast would probably be by train. It’s an hour drive south of Brisbane (capital of QLD), and sits just on the border of NSW & QLD. A rental car would be a better option though I think. Have you tried the cheap backpacker type vans? Try searching for “Wicked” or “Juicy” vans, they are cheap and popular with backpackers and people on a tight budget.

Why december to january?, as this is our wet season and cyclone season, plus stinger box jelly fish season which are very deadly. If we have a proper wet season, the roads often flood and you can be stuck for weeks in one town. Winter time are the best months to sight see Queensland and they are May, June, July.

When you consider bus/train/taxi fares for the 3 of you.. plus the added headache of the surfboards and the woefulness of our public transport, you’ll probably find it’s better to rent a car. You can even rent a camper then you don’t have to worry about accommodation! (www.wickedcampers.com.au)

If you’re focussing on the Gold Coast there won’t be any deadly jellyfish, they’re further up north around the reef area. A car will give you much more freedom to explore the beaches and other things you want to see as well. Northern NSW has great surf beaches (like Fingal, Cabarita, Kingscliffe, Byron Bay)… from the Gold Coast in a car, maybe 1/2 hour.. bus? probably not even possible.
